I can’t believe the nerve of this woman.  It is beyond my comprehension why they receive such positive press.  I just don’t get it.  We’re in big trouble with this couple…

WHOOPS!  Michelle Will Never Shop There Again

From Carol Felsenthal

Chicago-based journalist

At the suggestion of a friend and frequent source for the profiles I write for Chicago magazine, I had lunch a few weeks with one of Chicago’s preeminent jewelers. I was asking him about men who buy his expensive jewels for both their wives and mistresses. The look he shot at me made it clear those were private matters he would never, ever discuss.

If Michelle has the urge to look at jewelry the next time she’s in Chicago, she would be wise to stop by his store.

The top of the front-page in Sunday’s Chicago Sun-Times features a photo of Michelle in diamond, dangling earrings and the headline, "An Exchange She Can Believe In." It trumpets the lead item in gossip columnist Mike Sneed’s column, explaining that for Michelle’s birthday in January 2008, then candidate Obama bought his wife diamond earrings for a reported $5,000, which she returned for earrings with bigger diamonds that "reportedly" cost $12,000.

Sneed’s source was Sherry Bender, the owner of Goldsmith Ltd., at 900 N. Michigan. Why Bender would be so indiscreet–in contrast to Chicago’s Ikram Goldman, the Rush Street boutique owner who has been Michelle’s source of advice, styling, inauguration dress, coat, and ball gown, as well as jewelry–is puzzling. (When I sought to interview Ms. Goldman for my profile just out on Michelle Obama, she was so far from talking to me that she did not even respond to my letter and email.)

Ms. Bender tells Sneed:

"Mr. Obama came in himself and picked out a pair of earrings for Michelle, which were sort of long and dramatic, and the diamond dangled at the bottom."

A short time, later, Bender continues, "Michelle came in, returned the earrings, looked around and picked out something a little more classic, with bigger stones, that was twice the price. She wanted to check with her husband first — then Barack came back in and bought what she wanted — which happened to be what I suggested originally." (Bender, Sneed notes, designed the earrings herself.)

As I describe in the profile, "The Making of a First Lady," Michelle has expensive tastes and it was she who wanted to trade up from their two-bedroom condominium on the first floor of a three-story walkup, for which they had paid $277,500 in 1993, to the $1.65 million six-bedroom Georgian revival Kenwood mansion that landed them in a deal with the wife of Tony Rezko, the convicted felon and fundraiser/fixer, waiting for sentencing–and talking to the feds in the meantime.

"Michelle …wanted a house, …a big house with a big yard. Barack wanted his family to be comfortable, but he would have been satisfied with three spoons, a fork, and a dish,’" a person who knows the Obamas well told me. "It was an issue for her." So Michelle has expensive tastes. They had taken a second mortgage out on the condo to help them through his 2004 race for the U.S. Senate. The dynamic between the two was dicey; she would have liked to have stayed home after her second daughter was born in 2001; she couldn’t because of what she considered her husband’s selfish indulgence of insisting on staying in the state Senate and teaching part time at the University of Chicago law school. She knew, because she had worked at Sidley & Austin–as had Barack for a summer while at Harvard Law–that Sidley would have welcomed the first African American president of the Harvard Law Review and allowed him to handle pro-bono public interest cases. "She still didn’t really understand why he was not at a law firm, where he could be making $700,000 or $800,000 a year or a million or two," a former advisor told me.

At that point, when he spent $12,000 on the earrings, the Obamas had plenty of money–he was a celebrity because of his keynote address at the 2004 Democratic National Convention–and his books were stuck at the top of the bestseller lists earning him millions in royalties. Once their finances became more than comfortable and her husband won the U.S. Senate seat and was a national figure, Michelle, whose friends unanimously call her "grounded," signed on to what looked like a tough race for the nomination. Even then– Obama had won the Iowa caucuses on January 3, but lost the New Hampshire primary on January 8, and important caucuses in Nevada, South Carolina awaited them later in January, and 22 Super Tuesday primaries and caucuses awaited them on February 5–Hillary was still the best bet to win the nomination, if not quite the "inevitable" nominee. Barack had enormous appreciation for Michelle and her increasingly willingness to hit the trail as a surrogate. The earrings were, perhaps, a token of appreciation. Michelle is often compared to Jackie Kennedy Onassis as a fashion icon who will bring couture clothes, style and taste to the White House–and a forum for American designers who struggle in this economy. The comparison is fine with the millions who admire the Obamas.

In her own career, Michelle could have earned big money had she been willing to remain at Sidley and eventually become a six-figure partner there or elsewhere. But she wasn’t willing to do that. She gave it up for public service jobs that paid her a fraction of her earning potential. She wanted to do good and make a difference. (In that sense, perhaps she is better compared to Eleanor Roosevelt.)

Still, now that Michelle Obama is in the White House and the spotlight is on her relentlessly, she has to be careful that Nancy Reagan is not the First Lady to whom she is compared.

This story may come as no surprise to some people, especially to anti-Obamabots.  Is the tide finally turning?  Are people already starting to wise up and see the Obamas for who they are?  When will the human hoovers (the news media) stop sucking up to them and all things Obama?  I will never precede his name with the "p word" because it is a title of courtesy and respect.  I don’t respect him any more than I respect Bill Clinton, who also registers as a zero on the corrupt-o-meter.  Watch as the change unfolds, America.  It’s definitely change you can’t trust.  You’ll soon see that he’s not all he’s cracked up to be.  It may not take too long before Michelle’s true colors start to show as well, and I don’t mean that in a derogatory sense, either.  We now have BO in the White House and a BM (big mouth, Joe Biden) as his partner-in-crime.  This administration is really starting to stink!  Their inexperience and agendas are starting to materialize.  What do you expect when you have two minds without a single thought?
Now we have Chicago thug-style politics at its best which is exhibited in the case of Michelle Obama and her job at the University of Chicago hospital.  Remember, when referring to her job, she stated, "I had to work twice as hard to come half as far"?  Oh, really?  After Barack Obama became an Illinois state legislator, she moved up the ranks as well, scoring a job as ‘vice president of community relations’ at the University Of Chicago Hospital for a very generous salary of $121,910.  When Obama became a senator in 2005, her ‘salary’ leapfrogged to $316,962 for the same job―and one of Senator Obama’s first acts in office was to see to it that the hospital received over a million dollars of our tax money as an earmark.  Now her previous job has been "quietly eliminated".  It’s the Chicago Way―cushy, no-show jobs in exchange for political patronage―fist bump!

She has quite a lot of nerve talking down about a position where she earned a 260% salary increase.  She must have been a great asset to the hospital that her job could be eliminated so easily.  I don’t trust her as far as I can stand her.  Remember how the media trashed the Republicans for the infamous "$150,000 Palin wardrobe"?  Well, this report should have gotten top billing to be "politically correct", but it didn’t get any air time at all:

Here’s a picture of Obama #2, shown here wearing the dress designed by her "surfer dude-turned-designer", Tracy Feith (also pictured).  Does she look like "First Lady" material to you?

Here’s the story from the Chicago Daily Observer on Obama #2 (aptly named).  I intentionally kept every one of the comments intact below the article because I felt they need to be read as well.  I guess not everyone is on the Obamaboat…

Michelle Obama’s Job Eliminated

Chicago Daily Observer 14 January 2009 58 Comments

She hasn’t shown up for work very regularly over the last year or so, so when Michelle Obama’s $300,000 job was cut at the University of Chicago Hospitals, it may have been hard to notice the difference.  Crain’s skipped the part about the incoming First Lady, must have been an oversight in their expert analysis of Chicago Business, because we know Crain’s is “Not show business. All business”.

The Tribune announced the layoff without much analysis, but let the cat far enough out of the bag to prompt our Don Rose to question how important Michelle Obama’s job must have been, as it was so easily eliminated.  The New Republic gnashes their dentures at the how a community can be served without Michelle Obama, despite the void of actual labor she has performed while being on the campaign trail.  The comments are much more informative than the article in TNR.

The Washington Post smells a rat, with a critical article of a lawyer from U of C hospitals, who worked with Michelle Obama in implementing a rationalization of emergency healthcare delivery.  The lawyer, Susan Sher, had the nerve to co-operate with President Bush and the Federal Government’s initiatives to deliver emergency care in the emergency room, and everyday care in health clinics.  No word on the Michelle’s level of co-operation with the Bush administration at her executive position.

The Univesity of Chicago Press Room continues to impress with stories about blood cancer therapies and a Webcast of innovative cardiac surgery, but is tight lipped about layoffs effecting the First Lady and 15 other senior executives.

Isn’t this that $300K salary that Michelle Obama had to “work twice as hard to get half as much” for? Sounds like politics as usual.

    Michelle’s Expensive Taste In Earrings
During last year’s presidential election, Michelle Obama poked fun at President Bush’s $600 stimulus tax rebate plan. She suggested at the time there was little you could do with that amount of money than buy something like a pair of earrings. “You’re getting $600. What can you do with that?” she asked. “Barack’s approach is that the short-term quick fix kinda stuff sounds good. And it may even feel good that first month when you get that check. And then you go out and you buy a pair of earrings.”

It turns out that $600 wouldn’t cover the purchase of earrings for Michelle. Barack’s approach was to buy her a $5,000 pair of diamond earrings for her birthday last year. Michelle promptly returned the earrings to the jewelry store where he purchased them and exchanged them for a $12,000 pair. Quoting a store employee, the Sun-Times’ Michael Sneed writes, “Michelle came in, returned the earrings, looked around and picked out something a little more classic, with bigger stones, that was twice the price. She wanted to check with her husband first — then Barack came back in and bought what she wanted — which happened to be what I suggested originally!” The store employee added, “It was pretty typical of a married couple. But that was what was cute about it.”

Obama’s half-brother, George Obama, was arrested for pot possession in Kenya.  His droopy, blood-shot eyes probably gave him away.  I’m sure you’ll hear varying versions on this story, and it will probably be a non-issue with the Obamamedia.  Obama’s past drug use was a non-issue in the election so George will probably get no more than a slap on the wrist.  Maybe he’ll say he didn’t inhale.  Hey, it worked for Clinton.  I’m sure Obama will say that "George Obama is a relative I don’t even know."  Then we can all say, "There he goes again" with his "I know nothing!" rhetoric.  Some news reports say that George Obama lives in Huruma, a Nairobi slum.  My first question is how the heck is he able to afford pot?  Maybe in Huruma, you get more bhang for the buck…Hey, I couldn’t resist…

Obama’s half brother arrested on charge of marijuana possession

From David McKenzie

NAIROBI, Kenya (CNN) — George Obama, the half brother of U.S. President Barack Obama, has been arrested by Kenyan police on a charge of possession of marijuana, police said Saturday.

George Obama was arrested in Kenya on a charge for possession of marijuana, according to police.

Inspector Augustine Mutembei, the officer in charge, said Obama was arrested on charges of possession of cannabis, known in Kenya as Bhang, and resisting arrest. He is scheduled to appear in court Monday, Mutembei said.

He is being held at Huruma police post in the capital of Nairobi.

CNN Correspondent David McKenzie talked with George Obama at the jail where he is being held. Speaking from behind bars, Obama denied the allegations.

"They took me from my home," he said, "I don’t know why they are charging me."

George Obama and the president barely know each other, though they have met before. George Obama was one of the president’s few close relatives who did not go to the inauguration in Washington last week.

In his memoir, "Dreams from My Father," Barack Obama describes meeting George as a "painful affair." Barack Obama’s trip to Kenya meant meeting family he had never known.

McKenzie tracked down George Obama in August 2008 and found him at a small house in Huruma, a Nairobi slum, where he lives with his mother’s extended family. His birth certificate shows he is Barack Obama’s half brother.

The two men share the same Kenyan father. In the memoir, Barack Obama struggles to reconcile with his father after he left him and his mother when he was just a child.

Barack Obama Sr. died in a car accident when George was just 6 months old. Like his half brother, George hardly knew his father.

George was his father’s last child and had not been aware of his famous half brother until he rose to prominence in the Democratic primaries last year.

Unlike his grandmother in Kogela, in western Kenya, George Obama had received little attention from the media until reports about him surfaced in August 2008.

The reports sprung from an Italian Vanity Fair article saying George Obama lived in a shack and was "earning less than a dollar a day." Those reports left George Obama angry.

"I was brought up well. I live well even now," he said. "The magazines, they have exaggerated everything.

"I think I kind of like it here. There are some challenges, but maybe it is just like where you come from, there are the same challenges," Obama said.

Obama, who is in his mid-20s, said at the time that he was learning to become a mechanic and was active in youth groups in Huruma. He said he tried to help the community as much as he can.

Google put a quick stop to the negative "failure" links to an "Obama" search―much faster than the four years they took to remove them for Bush.  I believe their quick action on behalf of Obama was very politically motivated.  The fact that some "Googlebombs" are still enabled makes one think they have a blacklist in place for tweaking certain results at their own discretion.

It’s sad to think that even Google is in Obama’s pocket now.  Our days as a free nation with the privilege of freedom of speech are numbered.  Here’s some info on the subject…

Google Purges Obama ‘Failure’ Links

by Brian Heater

It didn’t take very long into Barack Obama’s presidency for a group of users to declare him a "failure"–or for them to assert such feeling by way of Google.

Following in the footsteps of the much publicized "miserable failure" Googlebombing of George W. Bush, the "group" greeted the new president during his first days in office by assuring that searches for the world "failure" brought him to the top of the list of results (a sunnier version of the move did the same with the phrase "cheerful achievement.")

The problem? A legacy of Googlebombing attached to official government sites featuring Bush, which transitioned over to Obama after the inauguration.

Google addressed the prank in a recent blog post, stating:

"Rather than edit these prank results by hand, we developed an algorithm a few years ago to detect Googlebombs. We tend not to run it all the time, because it takes some computing power to process our entire web index and because true Googlebombs are quite rare (we joke around the Googleplex that more articles have been written about Googlebombs than there are actual examples of Googlebombs)."

Google ran the algorithm, and now, in a turn for the meta, searches for the terms "cheerful achievement" and "failure" will lead users to online posts about the Googlebombs, rather than the Googlebombs themselves.

It’s disturbing how adoring the media is to Obama.  They are so bias in their reporting of all things Obama, we will never know exactly how he is performing as our president.  If you think Watergate was a big cover up, that’s nothing compared to the media cover up of Obama.  As far as they’re concerned, he can do no wrong.  Remember when the Democrats and the media were all over Bush’s blunder when he went to open a door and found it was closed…

He was called "a lame duck" along with an assortment of other, more offensive names, yet when Obama called out, "The acorn doesn’t fall far from the tree" during his campaigning, the media ignored it.  What about the claim by Obama that "he knew nothing about his aunt (his father’s half-sister, ‘Auntie Zetuni’) living in subsidized housing in Boston, MA or her illegal status?"  That’s right, Obama, feign ignorance…"I know nothing!"  I don’t believe for a minute that he didn’t know.  After all, his campaign accepted $250 in donations from her.  It will be interesting to see how she fares in her hearing which is scheduled for April.  Will Obama come to her rescue?  If he does, every illegal alien in the country will demand amnesty as well.

Remember the George Stephanopoulos cover up…

Asked about whether McCain himself has done anything to suggest he’s Muslim, Obama said, “Let’s not play games. What I was suggesting — you’re absolutely right that John McCain has not talked about my Muslim faith. And you’re absolutely right that, that has not come…”

“Christian faith,” Stephanopoulos interrupted, correcting Obama.

“… my Christian faith. Well, what I’m saying is that he hasn’t suggested that I’m a Muslim.

George Stephanopoulos quietly corrected Obama instead of letting him take the hit.  I recently mentioned in a previous blog how the media explained away the reason Obama had to do an oath do-over.  Too many words to remember without that trusted teleprompter.  As a result, when he did the second oath, it was "audio only", and I’m thinking it’s because he was reading from a teleprompter this time.  He’s always getting a free pass when he screws up, yet Bush never even made it out of the gate without the media bashing him.  The media frenzy over the bruise he sported was played out for days…

Bush joked about it, "If my mother is listening, mother, I should have listened to you: Always chew your pretzels before you swallow."

Bush lost consciousness for a brief time in the White House on Sunday evening while eating a pretzel and watching a professional football game on television.  He fell from his couch and has a scrape and large bruise on his left cheekbone, plus a bruise on his lower lip.  His glasses cut the side of his face.  Not one story was reported about how lucky he was and how it could have been worse.  Whenever something bad happened to Bush, they loved it and would exploit it for all it was worth.  The media is guilty of what I call the eighth deadly sin:  schadenfreude, which means pleasure taken from observing the misery of another.  How sad for us that we can no longer depend on the news we hear; we get the news they want us to know―censorship at its best.

I’m predicting it is only a matter of time before our news will be censored like it is in other countries.  Case in point:  Only minutes into his presidency, Obama was censored by the Chinese government.  References to communism and to dissent in his inaugural address were deleted from Chinese-language translations in the state media.  During a television report, state-run CCTV cut away from the English-language video of Obama’s speech Tuesday, leaving the anchorwoman and a Washington correspondent befuddled about how to fill the airtime.  The sentence that seemed to most irritate the Chinese was when Obama said, "Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions."  We already see how our news reporters manipulate news stories about Obama by casting him in an adoring light.  Obama sometimes chooses his words carelessly when there is not a teleprompter nearby, but don’t worry.  The adoring media will cover up any Obama negativity.  When his approval rating starts nosediving, and it will, can we depend upon the media to be straight with us?  I doubt it.

As I’ve said over and over again, Obama is nothing without his best friend, the teleprompter.  Can you imagine how this would have played out in the media if this were Bush instead of Obama.  What the heck is the attraction?  I just don’t see it.  He makes one gaffe after another, yet his teflon coating protects him from negativity.  I can see his cockiness starting to surface.  Watch as he walks now, he’s now got a mocky, cocky stride, and we have his adoring fan base to thank for that.  They’ve created a monster.

There are so many Obama gaffes…too many to mention here, but this is the latest "D’oh! alert" in the Obama gaffe library…

Hey Bam, that’s not the door!

Wednesday, January 28th 2009, 3:07 PM

Obama approaches a window of the Oval Office, instead of the door, shown to the right.

It looks like President Obama hasn’t gotten acquainted to his White House surroundings. On the way back to the Oval Office Tuesday, the President approached a paned window, instead of the actual door — located a few feet to his right.

Gee, from what I’ve heard about this guy, I’m surprised he didn’t just use his magic powers and walk through the window when it didn’t miraculously open up for him!  This, to me, is an omen that he shouldn’t be on the other side of the window.  Even if this does surface in the news, my guess is that his adoring media will explain this away by saying that he’s not yet familiar with his new home.  Not only is he oblivious to his surroundings, he’s totally oblivious to what’s going on in this world.  Clearly, he’s out of his element here.  Maybe now the majority of you will see what few of us already know…that he’s just a media-hyped plain guy, not some supernatural being who has the power to stop all wars and bring us to prosperity.  The reality is that if you want money in your pocket, you’ll have to save what little you can because this administration is on a spending spree, not a tax-cutting mission.

Doors didn’t open automatically for Obama’s predecessor either. While making a hasty exit from a 2005 press conference in Beijing, former President George W. Bush tugged on the handles of a door, only to find it locked.

Bush laughed off the blunder, but the pictures still live on as part of Bush’s “lame duck” legacy. However, there was little note taken of Obama’s rookie mistake.

Obama, who was returning from meeting with Congressional leaders, may have been distracted by Republicans’ icy reception to his $825 billion stimulus package, which is poised to pass on Wednesday even without a groundswell of Republican support.

This article (see below) will be interesting to people suffering with bladder problems or arthritis (rheumatoid and osteoarthritis).  Of course, you should discuss this with your doctor beforehand because there are a lot of juices that shouldn’t be taken with some prescription medications because it interferes with the absorption of some drugs (think grapefruit juice and heart meds).
Another thing…because arthritis is caused from severe inflammation, I would like to suggest that you try to stay away from inflammatory foods like foods high in sugar, fried foods, most starches, and junk food).  You also might want to think about adding fish oil capsules (the molecularly distilled kind) which will do wonders to reduce inflammation.  Trust me, it will!  You should, of course, talk this over with your doctor first.  If he says it’s OK, take three 1,000mg capsules per day (one after each meal).  It won’t give you “fish breathe”, in case you’re wondering.
I would always try the natural approach before taking prescription drugs which have so many harmful side effects.  Of course, you won’t get immediate results, but if you drink this juice religiously and take the fish oil capsules every day, you may be singing their praises soon enough.  I would give it at least 3 months’ time.  Good luck, God bless and may you soon be enjoying improved robust health.  Please let me know how it goes…
Yours in good health,

Pomegranate: The Wellness Fruit

This antioxidant-rich superfood may help protect against arthritis, diabetes and a long list of other diseases.

There are many good reasons to pick up a pomegranate: they’re festive, seasonal, pack tons of antioxidants and, a new study suggests, may help to relieve symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disease.

In a recent study from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, researchers gave mice either a daily dose of pomegranate extract or water, in addition to their regular food. Ten days later, the mice were chemically induced to develop rheumatoid arthritis.

After six weeks, all the water-treated mice developed arthritis, but only two-thirds of the pomegranate-treated mice did. When the pomegranate drinkers did develop arthritis, it tended to set in later and with much less severity. What’s more, the pomegranate-treated mice had significantly lower levels of inflammatory compounds in their joint fluids, suggesting that the antioxidant polyphenols in pomegranate juice might short-circuit the inflammatory process that causes pain and swelling in rheumatoid arthritis.

Most studies link pomegranate’s benefits to its powerful punch of polyphenols—including anthocyanins (found in blue, purple and deep-red foods) and tannins (also found in wine and tea). In a study published earlier this year, researchers found that compared with other antioxidant-rich beverages including blueberry juice, cranberry juice and red wine, “pomegranate [juice] naturally has the highest antioxidant capacity,” reports David Heber, M,D. Ph.D., study collaborator and director of the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition.

Arthritis is just the latest in a long list of conditions for which pomegranate juice shows therapeutic potential. Research suggests the fruit has benefits for the heart:studies have shown it may help to reduce the buildup of plaque in arteries and lower blood pressure. Other work found that when men with prostate cancer drank a cup of pomegranate juice daily, the increase in their levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA), a marker of disease progress, slowed. Still more preliminary studies hint that pomegranate juice may help manage diabetes and erectile dysfunction.

Critics point out that much of this research, including the recent study out of Case Western, has been funded by PomWonderful—the leading pomegranate juice brand—which has poured some $25 million into clinical research involving the fruit. But others point out that the results—much of them published in reputable, peer-reviewed journals—speak for themselves.

Bottom Line: It’s still too early to recommend drinking pomegranate juice to alleviate arthritis symptoms, but a cup a day of 100 percent juice delivers plenty of antioxidants that may provide other health benefits. Check with your doctor first, however, as pomegranate juice may interact with some medications, including statins. Don’t forget fresh pomegranates—in season now. Although you don’t get as many tannins eating the seeds as drinking the juice, you will get a bit of fiber and abundant punicic acid, a polyunsaturated heart-healthy oil.

Even though this is my favorite quote…
"If we treat people as they are, we make them worse. If we treat people as they ought to be, we help them become what they are capable of becoming." -Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
…I have to take exception when dealing with the terrorists of today.  Obama wants to reply to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s letter of congratulations by extend an olive branch to him and the people who have a deep hatred for Americans because we don’t embrace Islam and the Quran.  I know Edward Bulwer-Lytton’s quote:  The pen is mightier than the sword", but we’re talking about 2009 here, not 1839.

Look at this story about Ayman al-Zawahri, Al-Qaida’s #2 leader (correctly named…he’s definitely a #2 leader!) from November of last year.  Does Obama really think that his media-induced charisma and self-proclaimed superman powers will stop all wars.  Think again, Obama.  You’re playing with the big boys now…

Terrorist Call on Americans to Embrace Islam

CAIRO, Egypt (AP) – Al-Qaida’s No. 2 leader appeared in a new video posted Friday calling on Americans to embrace Islam to overcome the financial meltdown, which he said was a consequence of the Sept. 11 attacks and militant strikes in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Ayman al-Zawahri, whose 80-minute recording touched on a number of subjects, also lashed out at Afghanistan’s government and said any U.S. gains in Iraq will be temporary.

Zawahri’s new recording came in the form of a question-and-answer session with an off-camera interviewer.

Appearing in a white turban and robe, Zawahri discussed the roots of the U.S. economic crisis. He said it was a repercussion of the Sept. 11 attacks in the United States, and that the crisis would continue “as long as the foolish American policy of wading in Muslim blood continues.”

“The American economy was afflicted by a downturn and loss of investor confidence in the market following the events of Sept. 11,” he said.

“The modern economy has been destroyed by the strikes of the mujahedeen (in Iraq and Afghanistan) and usury,” he said, using the Arabic term for holy warriors.

Under Islamic Sharia law, usury, like drinking alcohol, is among the grand sins.

Zawahri then called on the American people to “embrace Islam to live a life free of greed, exploitation and forbidden wealth.”

He also dared President George W. Bush to increase the number of troops in Afghanistan and the region.

“I tell Bush: the dogs of Afghanistan have yet to eat their fill of the flesh of the Americans,” Zawahri said. “I challenge you, if you’re really a man, to send the entire American army to Pakistan and the tribal regions.”

Zawahri’s new tape came about a week after his last message, which he used to accuse U.S. President-elect Barack Obama of turning his back on his black heritage to gain power.

Osama bin Laden’s top lieutenant did not refer to the attacks in Mumbai, India, late Wednesday and early Thursday that killed scores.

Intelligence analysts said the violence carried trademarks of al-Qaida but evidence has been pointing to homegrown terrorists. A little known suspected Islamic militant group has claimed responsibility.

Zawahri also labeled Afghan President Hamid Karzai’s recent attempt to negotiate with Taliban insurgents a sign of his government’s weakness. He also accused the United States of giving phony reports of success in the turbulent region, maintaining the Americans are doomed to fail in Afghanistan and the tribal areas of Pakistan.

Discussing Iraq, Zawahri said that U.S. gains are temporary. He also stressed that that Sunni Awakening Councils – former insurgents who have revolted against al-Qaida – will not be accepted by the Shiite majority government.

Zawahri spoke out against charges al-Qaida has killed innocent civilians, calling the reports Western propaganda.

Zawahri, an Egyptian, also took aim at Egypt’s government, blaming it for the blockade of the Gaza Strip because it has kept its border with the territory sealed. Israel has also sealed crossing points because of Palestinian rocket fire.

Zawahri called on Egyptian students and workers to stage a general strike to demand the lifting of the siege on Gaza.

“What is the problem if everybody goes on strike in Egypt and announces that they are blockading themselves in their houses until the government lifts the blockade from our brothers in Gaza?” he said.

Although I don’t appreciate Bush 41 calling any woman "ugly", this was pretty funny stuff, and is a great diversion from the stresses of a crumbling economy and the continuous government handouts to greedy, corrupt corporations.  I guess former presidents do have a comical side to them when the pressures are off their shoulders.
Protester to Bush 41:  "Stay out of my womb!"
Yesterday at the National Automobile Dealers Association dinner in New Orleans, George H.W. Bush and Clinton were a part of a panel, and Greta intro’d the setment she aired on her show, alluding to the sly wit that both men demonstrate.  They truly have a palpable sense of camaraderie, and I admire both of them for it. We all need to laugh at the folks every once in a while, and it’s really healthy to see them laugh at themselves. This was just plain fun.

Remember when Obama slipped and said, during a speech on the campaign trail, "The acorn doesn’t fall far from the tree" before he corrected himself by stumbling out of that line.  He wasn’t kidding!  He may have been referring to the "money" tree then.  ACORN, a group that Obama used to work with, helped get him into the White House by administering fraudulent voter registration drives in his favor.  ACORN employees registered dead people; same people in multiple counties; duplicates, even triplicate registrations; registering people from different states; fictitious names; and even adding Mickey Mouse to the registration list.  They say payback is a bitch, and this one is costing us a lot of loot.  Of course, the Democrats will vote this one in since their guy was given the American throne, with ACORN’s corrupt help.
Because of his inexperience, he will be making a lot of mistakes along the way, and here’s a great example.  Read it and weep…

ACORN Could Get Billions from Democrats’ Trillion Dollar Spending Plan
"Job Creation" Bill Offers Taxpayer-Funded Bonanza for Organization Reportedly Under Federal Investigation

Washington, Jan 23 – The House Democrats’ trillion dollar spending bill, approved on January 21 by the Appropriations Committee and headed to the House floor next week for a vote, could open billions of taxpayer dollars to left-wing groups like the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN).  ACORN has been accused of perpetrating voter registration fraud numerous times in the last several elections; is reportedly under federal investigation; and played a key role in the irresponsible schemes that caused a financial meltdown that has cost American taxpayers hundreds of billions of dollars since last fall.

House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) and other Republicans are asking a simple question: what does this have to do with job creation?  Are Congressional Democrats really going to borrow money from our children and grandchildren to give handouts to ACORN in the name of economic “stimulus?”

Incredibly, the Democrats’ bill makes groups like ACORN eligible for a $4.19 billion pot of money for “neighborhood stabilization activities.”  Funds for this purpose were authorized in the Housing and Economic Recovery Act, signed into law in 2008.  However, these funds were limited to state and local governments.  Now House Democrats are taking the unprecedented step of making ACORN and other groups eligible for these funds:

“For a further additional amount for ‘Community Development Fund,’ $4,190,000,000, to be used for neighborhood stabilization activities related to emergency assistance for the redevelopment of abandoned and foreclosed homes as authorized under division B, title III of the Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008 (Public Law 110–289), of which—

“(1) not less than $3,440,000,000 shall be allocated by a competition for which eligible entities shall be States, units of general local government, and nonprofit entities or consortia of nonprofit entities[.]”

“(2) up to $750,000,000 shall be awarded by competition to nonprofit entities or consortia of nonprofit entities to provide community stabilization assistance […]”

The House Democrats’ trillion dollar spending bill also includes $1 billion for the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program.  CDBG funds are given by the federal government to state and local governments which often contract with nonprofits for services related to the purpose of the grant.

ACORN knows how to secure CDBG funds.  Audit reports filed by ACORN’s headquarters with the Office of Management and Budget show that ACORN spent $1,588,599 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program funds from FY 2003 through FY 2007.  It is not clear from these records when or from what source the funds were awarded to ACORN.  It is also not clear whether ACORN chapters or affiliates have received CDBG grants on their own.

House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) repeatedly urged President George W. Bush and other federal officials to withhold taxpayer funds from ACORN, including $17.2 million in federal grants awarded in December 2008 after numerous allegations of wrongdoing in connection with ACORN’s election activities were reported by the news media.

Leader Boehner also released a study of federal records in October 2008 listing tens of millions in federal grants received by ACORN.  A new updated and more expansive study reveals that ACORN has actually received millions more than first thought.  A review of the Federal Register and news releases issued by federal agencies showed that ACORN was awarded more than $53 million in taxpayer dollars.  This amount does not reflect the millions more ACORN has received in federal block grant funds awarded to state and local agencies which passed them on to ACORN.

Some think that desperate times call for desperate measures, but this tragedy should never have happened…

I actually cried when I read this story.  For some reason, this couple didn’t think they had anyone to turn to.  What a tragic loss.  May God rest their beautiful souls…

LA man upset over job kills wife, 5 kids, himself

Updated: 2009-01-28 11:41

LOS ANGELES – An American man who fatally shot his wife, five young children and himself Tuesday had earlier faxed a note to a TV station claiming the couple had just been fired from their hospital jobs and together planned the killings as a final escape for the whole family.

This undated photo obtained January 27, 2009 from Ervin Antonio Lupoe’s Facebook web page shows Ervin Antonio Lupoe (top L), his wife Ana (top R) and their five children: Brittney (top), twin girls Jaszmin and Jassely and twin boys Benjamin and Christian. The exact identification of the sets of twins is not known. A medical technician fatally shot his wife, five young children and himself Tuesday after claiming in a note to a TV station that he and his wife both had just been fired.

"Why leave the children to a stranger?" Ervin Lupoe wrote, according to KABC-TV.

The station called police after receiving the fax, and a police dispatch center also received a call from a man who stated, "’I just returned home and my whole family’s been shot."

Officers rushed to the home in Wilmington, a small community between the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, about 8:30 am, apparently within minutes of the killings. Officers could still smell the gunshot residue in the air.

Although the fax asserted that Ana Lupoe planning the killings of the whole family, police Lt. John Romero said Lupoe was the suspect. A revolver was found next to his body.

Ana Lupoe’s body was found in a downstairs bedroom with the bodies of the couple’s twin 2-year-old boys. The bodies of an 8-year-old girl, twin 5-year-old girls were found alongside Lupoe’s in an upstairs bedroom.

It was the fifth mass death of a Southern California family by murder or suicide in a year. Police urged those facing tough economic times to get help rather than resort to violence.

"Today our worst fear was realized," said Deputy Chief Kenneth Garner. "It’s just not a solution. There’s just so many ways you find alternatives to doing something so horrific and drastic as this."

Lupoe removed three of the children from school about a week and a half ago, saying the family was moving to Kansas, the school principal told KCAL-TV. Crescent Heights Elementary School Principal Cherise Pounders-Caver said nothing seemed to be troubling Lupoe at that time; she did not ask why the family was moving.

Kaiser Permanente Medical Center West Los Angeles released a statement confirming both Lupoe and his wife worked there; both were medical technicians.

"We are deeply saddened to hear of the deaths of the Lupoe family," it said in a statement.

Rich people are trying to live like the rest of us, under designer cover, of course.  I had to laugh at this story.

How is having rich people hide their luxury spending habits helping them sympathize with what the rest of the world is going through?  The only way they could know our plight is if they walk a mile in our shoes, not in their Jimmy Choo shoes.  Those gluttonous, spoiled pigs are so out of touch with what we’re going through, yet they’re the first to speak out against something they don’t like, even if they don’t know what they’re talking about.  They use their celebrity status to their advantage.  They’re not living like the rest of us, at least not honestly…

Conspicuous consumption is out, inconspicuous consumption remains

The Associated Press

updated 7:12 p.m. ET, Tues., Jan. 27, 2009

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. – Throwing your money around is so pre-recession.

As the economy weakens, the wealthy and the businesses that cater to them say it’s more common — even chic — to scale back extravagant spending and play down affluence. Retailing experts call it luxury shame, or stealth wealth.

From Rodeo Drive to Fifth Avenue, that means one thing: Hide the labels.

Some shoppers are asking cashiers at high-end stores to put their purchases in plain white paper bags. Others want their expensive clothes and jewelry shipped home so they can walk out of the store without any bags at all.

"There’s a sense of there being a gaucheness in spending in excess and coming home with a Louis Vuitton or Chanel bag," says Lucyann Barry, a personal shopper and stylist for New York’s ultra-rich.

For one self-conscious client, Barry recently delivered a $1,200 Gucci handbag disguised as a gift so the rest of her family wouldn’t know she had bought it herself.  (When you feel the need to hide something, you know what you’re doing is wrong.)

Of course, plenty of rich people have become decidedly less so as stocks, homes and businesses have declined in value during the recession. And they’re cutting back. Holiday sales were down at Neiman Marcus, Tiffany & Co. and Saks Fifth Avenue.

Despite the slump, the affluent still maintain lifestyles that would seem extravagant to the vast majority of Americans — hundreds of dollars spent at exclusive restaurants, thousands dropped on shopping sprees.

What’s different now is the extra care some are putting into making themselves seem more like everybody else.  (Oh, they should be applauded for pretending to be like everyone else.  Please!  Spare me!)

"I’m trying to be more covert," said Edward Douglas, of Randolph, N.J., who owns a small manufacturing company that he says has so far been unaffected by the recession.

One of his luxuries is vacationing with his family in the Bahamas, and although he still intends to go this year, he’s planning on flying commercial instead of by private jet.  (He’s lucky.  The rest of us have to stay home and vacation in Back Porch Beach for some fun in the sun.)

Robert Jones, who owns businesses including a nightclub and two restaurants, now spends $400 on a regular hotel room for his family rather than shelling out $1,000 for a suite.

And instead of chartering a private plane for business trips, he’s signed up for CoGoJets’ "jetpooling" service — the jet-set equivalent of sharing a taxi.

"A lot of us are downsizing not only because we have to, but because we think it is the right thing to do," he said.

At the trendy Intermix clothing store in West Los Angeles, some shoppers are still willing to drop $10,000 on a shopping spree that might bring home a couple of ostrich skin handbags, a pair of shoes and a designer dress.

But instead of walking out with one of Intermix’s prestigious shopping bags, they often have their purchases shipped to their homes. They also come to the store dressed down in jeans and a T-shirt, a clerk observed.  (This must be a requirement in becoming a celebrity—taking the “hypocritical” oath [as opposed to the Hippocratic Oath taken by doctors].)

"The fashionista is now a recessionista," said Burton M. Tansky, president and CEO of Neiman Marcus, which is throwing more invitation-only events for small groups of its best customers.

The fashion industry itself appears to be waking up to the new subdued shopping mood among the well-heeled. That means more understated colors and prints, says fashion consultant Robert Burke, who has previewed the collections of several major designers that are to be displayed next month in New York.

In Hollywood, a place that usually accepts any excuse to throw a party, holiday gatherings were sparse last year — even among people who could afford them.

And while Hollywood power brokers will still eat and greet at Spago in Beverly Hills or Granita in Malibu, they’re less likely to splurge on those $300 bottles of wine.

"People want to look as though they are respectful that this is a recession," said Barbara Lazaroff, who with her ex-husband and business partner, Wolfgang Puck, operates upscale restaurants in Beverly Hills, Las Vegas and other cities.  (Celebrities frown upon cheap knockoffs, and the irony is that they are proving to be cheap knockoffs themselves.)

In the run-up to this year’s Golden Globe awards, Daily Variety reported dozens fewer sponsors lined up to hustle their wares at swag suites, those hotel rooms where celebrity nominees drop by to pick up bags filled with thousands of dollars’ worth of designer trinkets.

"We have this culture of luxury shame," says Hollywood publicist Michael Levine. "I think it’s become kind of shameful to express over-affluence."  (The only thing that’s shameful is the amount of money these celebrities get, and don’t deserve.)

But there’s another way of thinking about it: Maybe, if the super rich really want to help out their fellow Americans, living a less luxurious lifestyle isn’t the way to go. Money dished out on pricey dinners and clothes keeps people employed.  (Oh, really!  Those are probably the words from the owner of a pricey restaurant or clothing store.  I’m thinking that money dished out on pricey dinners and clothes would only help the rich owners.  If the super rich really wanted to help out their fellow Americans, what about them staying home one night a week from their expensive nightly drunken binges or extravagant shopping sprees, then donating to charity the money they would have spent?  That’s never an option, though.  Instead, they still splurge, never having to take responsibility for their bad spending habits.)

"We better hope they don’t stop spending too much," says Milton Pedraza, founder of the Luxury Institute, which tracks spending on luxury goods.

Not to worry, says Barry, the personal shopper and stylist, who has seen firsthand the difficulty wealthy people have in giving up luxury cold turkey.  (Are you kidding me!  Maybe Ms. Barry should walk down the street and see firsthand the difficulty poor homeless people have in wondering when they’ll get their next meal.  To them, cold turkey would be a luxury item!)

"Rather than buying six jackets at Chanel, let’s say, they may buy one jacket," she said. "There’s a big difference in getting out of the car with six Chanel shopping bags and getting out with just one."  (Tell that to the poor soul who doesn’t even have a sweater to wear, while he’s getting out of his cardboard box he calls ‘home’.)

Obama actually apologized to the Muslims for the behavior of the United States.  You don’t go on an Arab TV station and put down the US as the bad guy in the world.  I’ll bet there are a lot of Americans that are disgusted at the lack of American integrity this so-called leader has.  Talk about the "dumbing down" of Americans.

Obama chose an Arabic satellite TV network for his first formal television interview as president, part of a concerted effort, as he says “to repair relations with the Muslim world that were damaged under the previous administration.”  Oh, really!   Just as I predicted in a previous blog, Obama will fault Bush with all the wrong in our country for the next four years.  How convenient for him.  This is his way to explain away all his wrongdoings.  We have nothing to apologize for, but he does.  He would have been more honest if he said that he chose Arabic TV "to repair the damage he did to those two Muslim women while on the campaign trail".  Did he forget the time he had to apologize to those Muslim women who were part of the audience in Detroit, Michigan, at one of his campaign rallies?  Obama was “urged” by Muslim leaders to personally apologize to the women, Shimaa Abdelfadeel and Hebba Aref, after they were told they could not stand behind Obama because of their "hijab" or headgear, and were asked to leave.  Obama, at the time, was fighting accusations that he was a Muslim, and I guess this was his way of distancing himself from anything Muslim.  Bad call, Obama.  All is forgiven, though, because he will be blaming Bush for everything, and as most of the world thinks, Obama can do no wrong.  We’ll see…

PETA wanted to have this provocative commercial air during the Super Bowl, but it’s been banned, unless they can clean it up a bit.  The Video looks like the trailer for a new porn movie entitled, "My Secret Garden".  I’m all for free speech and expression, but is this really appropriate for kids’ viewing?

Too hot for TV: The Superbowl advert pulled for showing models taking too much pleasure from their veggies

By Daily Mail Reporter
Last updated at 11:53 AM on 28th January 2009

A provocative advert featuring sexy models rubbing various vegetables across their bodies has been banned for being too raunchy for TV.

American network NBC was planning to show the advert, put together by animal charity PETA, during this Sunday’s Superbowl extravaganza – an event watched by more than 70million Americans.

But it has refused to air the ‘Studies Show Vegetarians Have Better Sex’ advert unless certain shots – including a model licking a pumpkin and a model rubbing asparagus over her lap – are removed.

NBC objected to PETA’s advert, which included such moments as a model rubbing broccoli all over her body

The advert shows various models – all in underwear – playing with a variety of vegetables including aparagus, broccoli and aubergines.

They are filmed in a series of provocative poses, with one lying on a couch while running vegetables up and down her body and another crawling on all four towards a pumpkin before licking it.

Another model even blindfolds herself before running a bunch of asparagus across her breasts and abdomen.

‘Veggie Love’: One model enjoys the sensual caress of a pumpkin

‘Too hot for TV’: A model helps PETA sell the delights of asparagus

PETA said: ‘PETA’s ad – which features a bevy of beauties who are powerless to resist the temptation of veggie love – was deemed too hot for the Super Bowl.

‘NBC rejected the video because of concerns over "rubbing pelvic region with pumpkin," and a woman "screwing herself with broccoli".

‘Apparently, NBC has something against girls who love their veggies.’

NBC has so far made no official statement over the advert.

Touché!  This is a good one…

Katie Couric, Charlie Gibson, Brian Williams and a tough old U.S. Marine Sergeant were captured by terrorists in Iraq .

The leader of the terrorists told them he’d grant each of them one last request before

they were beheaded and dragged naked through the streets.

Katie Couric said,

‘Well, I’m a Southerner, so I’d like one last plate of fried chicken.’

The leader nodded to an underling who left and returned with the chicken.

Couric ate it all and said, ‘Now I can die content.’

Charlie Gibson said,

‘I’m living in ‘ New York , so I’d like to hear the song, The Moon and Me, one last  time.’

The terrorist leader nodded to another terrorist who had studied the Western world and knew the music.

He returned with some rag-tag musicians and played the song.

Gibson was satisfied.

Brian Williams said,

‘I’m a reporter to the end.  I want to take out my tape recorder and describe the scene here and what’s about to happen.

Maybe, someday, someone will hear it and know that I was on the job till the end.’

The leader directed an aide to hand over the tape recorder and Williams dictated his comments.

He then said, ‘Now I can die happy.’

The leader turned and said,

‘And now, Mr. U.S. Marine, what is your final wish?

‘Kick me in the ass,’ said the Marine.

‘What?’ asked the leader, ‘Will you mock us in your last hour?’

‘No, I’m NOT kidding.  I want you to kick me in the ass,’ insisted the Marine.

So the leader shoved him into the yard and kicked him in the ass.

The Marine went sprawling, but rolled to his knees,

pulled a 9 mm pistol from inside his cammies and shot the leader dead.

In the resulting confusion, he emptied his sidearm on six terrorists,

then with his knife he slashed the throat of one, and with an AK-47, which he took,

sprayed the rest of the terrorists killing another 11.

In a flash, all of them were either dead or fleeing for their lives.

As the Marine was untying Couric, Gibson, and Williams, they asked him,

‘Why didn’t you just shoot them all in the first place?

Why did you ask him to kick you in the ass?’

‘What?’ replied the Marine, ‘and have you three assholes report that I was the aggressor….?

Semper Fi!

Just when I didn’t think the news media and pharmaceutical industry couldn’t sink any lower, we are being cautioned that if you are thin, stay away from fat people because they’ll make you fat because of a fat virus.  Please!  I never heard anything more idiotic than that in a long time.  There’s a news story that has surfaced (video and separate story at bottom).  People of a different color, religion, gender and sexual orientation are off limits so who is left for the media to attack now?  Fat people, of course, because even in this overly offensed nation, it is still acceptable behavior to attack fat people.  How disgusting is this?  It is more apparent in Hollywood "fat" movies where thin people don fat suits instead of just hiring a fat person for the role, and on the comedy circuit where there are fat jokes galore.

I can see an old episode of the Twilight Zone resurfacing…1960s "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street", written by Rod Serling and covered one of his favorite themes:  mob psychology.  A peaceful summer day on Maple Street in a quiet suburban town is shattered when the residents believe they’re under some type of bizarre alien invasion.  Nearly all of their technology (i.e., lights, autos, appliances, etc.) begins to malfunction and panic sets into the neighborhood.  Instead of trying to find the true cause of this disaster, however, the residents take the path to least resistance and start to accuse each other of being the "monster."  Soon they’re turning on their own neighbors and a vicious riot ensues.  There truly are some aliens in the mix, but they’re basically unobtrusive observers to the chaos.  Their strategy is simply one of "divide and conquer" and the distrustful people of Maple Street are the perfect guinea pigs for their first experiment.

"The Monsters…" shows Serling’s most biting and cynical side.  There were many Twilight Zone episodes that dealt with mob rule as their subject matter, but this one is the best of all and a true classic in the series.  Even the aliens quite smugly agree with Serling’s view of human nature.  "They’ve found the enemy, and it is themselves."  How true those words are.

Now, in the 2009 version, Maple Street is Main Street USA, the alien attack is the "fat virus attack", technology malfunctioning is changed to people’s metabolism malfunctioning, blaming all the fat people in the world for their fatness.  Do you see the similarities here?  How barbaric is this?  People get fat because of varying reasons, none of which has to do with having a fat person sneezing on them or sitting next to them in a restaurant.  This is such nonsense that I have to laugh.  It’s ignorance in its ugliest form.  Just when fat people thought it was safe to eat a sandwich in front of others, this story comes out to set them back.  This is just as preposterous as saying that if you sit next to a guy who is allergic to shellfish, if he sneezes on you, you will "catch" the allergy as well.  Please, people, get your heads out of the sand!

If you ask me, and this is my own conspiracy theory surfacing here…This is the sly pharmaceuticals’ way of getting grant money out of an already overstressed, moneyless pit from the government, during a near dead economy.  Fear breeds fear, and when the money-grabbing pharmaceutical companies get out the word about the so-called “AD-36 adenovirus”, people will start to turn on fat people blaming them for their fatness or inability to lose weight instead of examining what the real cause is—inactivity and overeating.  Instead of reaching for a salad, they will go out and hunt down and punish fat people, where the pharmaceutical industry will say that they can try to stop the spread of this "fat virus" with more money from the government.  Remember when the government and the media told us fish oil was dangerous to our health?  Lo and behold, down the road, the government funds a research group that looked into a "pharmaceutical grade" fish oil capsule, which happens to be 2-3 times the price of natural fish oil capsules, they find it and FDA passes it.  The corrupt government officials from the FDA took handouts from the pharmaceutical giants and debunked natural fish oil caps while praising the prescription brand, stating that although it is more expensive, it’s "better for your health" because it’s government regulated.  Hmmm…when did government regulation help with anything?  Even Wall Street is still tanking after the government’s intervention.  Please!  Spare me the government and media mumbo jumbo!  I trust their reporting just about as far as I can throw them.

What would be more believable story to me is the media issuing a statement that some chickens had the AD-36 adenovirus and were put into the food supply.  The people who ate the infected chickens developed the virus, not by sitting next to a fat person.  That’s a story that seems to have more credence?  What do you think?

What is happening to this world as we know it?  The media consistently beefs up stories (no pun intended) for ratings and has always put the cart before the horse and has neglected to get their facts verified.  This fat virus story is out there creating anxiety and hostility, yet this virus has only been studied in lab animals (chickens and monkeys).  Human testing has not been committed on the grounds of “research ethics”.   What do they know about what this would do to humans?  Anything to sell a story, huh?  Whatever happened to journalistic ethics?  God help us…

Could fat be catching?

by Jenny Bryan

Could a fat virus be responsible for the epidemic of obesity that is sweeping the USA and seems to be spreading to Britain? Obesity scientist, Dr Nikhil Dhurandhar thinks that it is and has some intriguing research findings to back him up. But he knows that other obesity specialists cannot believe it’s that simple.

The concept of a virus causing obesity is so far away from mainstream causes of obesity that it’s going to take much more convincing and evidence simply because it’s a very different idea. But we’ll do it,’ predicts Dr Dhurandhar, Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan.

In the USA 61% of people are now officially classed as obese (with a body mass index, BMI, of over 30) or overweight (BMI of 25-30). The situation is scarcely any better in the UK, with about 20% of people obese and over 40% overweight.

If you look at a map of obesity in the USA, you can watch the epidemic spreading rather like a forest fire from the east coast to the west over the last 20 years. And it is this, says Dhurandhar, which suggests that there could be an infection.

It started with chickens

Dhurandhar’s story starts in Bombay in the 1980s with a mysterious epidemic that wiped out hundreds of thousands of chickens. The birds were found to be infected with an adenovirus called SMAM-1. Adenoviruses are very common. There are at least 40 types that affect humans and they cause about 1 in 20 cases of chest infection.

What was intriguing about the Indian chickens with SMAM-1 was not so much that they were probably killed by an adenovirus infection, but that they died plump, with a large pale liver and large kidneys. They weren’t thin and emaciated as you might expect an animal with a virus to be.

Working in India, Dhurandhar deliberately infected some more chickens with the same virus and, sure enough, these birds also put on weight. He decided to pursue his research in the USA, but the US government wasn’t keen on him importing a virus that had wiped out a large portion of the Indian chicken population.

Instead, Dhurandhar borrowed a human adenovirus, called Ad-36, from the US collection and set to work infecting first chickens and then rhesus monkeys and marmosets. Like the chickens, infected animals started to put on weight. Six months after they were infected, three male marmosets put on three times as much weight and doubled their body fat compared to three animals that were not infected. It was a very small study, but the results were still impressive.

It wouldn’t be ethical to infect humans with Ad-36 to see if they got fat. But, as the virus does occur naturally in the human population, Dhurandhar decided to compare infection rates in people who were fat with those who weren’t. He tested 500 people in three cities. Thirty per cent of obese people screened positive for the Ad-36 virus, compared with only 5 to 10% of those who were not overweight.

How the fat virus might work

Dhurandhar – and his critics – wanted to know how a fat virus might work. Dhurandhar showed that Ad-36 appeared to increase the size and number of fat cells in infected animals. In the laboratory, his experiments suggested that Ad-36 encourages pre-fat cells with the potential to become fat cells to do just that. Three times as many pre-fat cells became fat cells when they were exposed to Ad-36 compared with fat cells that weren’t exposed to the virus.

Twin studies

As part of his studies to try and convince other obesity researchers about the importance of the fat virus, Dhurandhar turned to a set of identical twins, Christyn and Beth. Born with exactly the same genes, there was no chance that one twin was genetically more likely to put on weight than the other. Until they went to college, the twins did indeed remain a very similar weight – as do nearly all sets of identical twins. But in the two years after Christyn left home to go to college, she became two and a half stone heavier than her twin. Blood tests showed that, while Beth remained Ad-36 negative, Christen had, at some point, been infected with the virus. Did the virus make her put on weight or did she just eat more and exercise less when she went to college? Who knows, but Dhurandhar blames it on the virus.

Others remain sceptical.

‘The idea that a virus may be causing obesity seems intrinsically unlikely,’ says Professor Stephen Bloom, from Imperial College, London. ‘Obesity has been growing at a constant rate for about 50 years and the causes are pretty obvious. People have been eating much more and taking less exercise. Why do you need to invent some strange story about a virus?’

Virologist, Professor William Russell, from the University of St Andrews, points out that adenoviruses have never been linked with a long-term illness, like obesity. They cause short-term infections and disappear. It’s important to keep an open mind but, at present, the evidence just does not stack up, he says.

A vaccine against obesity?

In the USA, some scientists are more prepared to accept that viruses could be involved.

‘Viruses can lie dormant for many years and we’ve seen the crossover of the HIV virus, for example, from animals to humans. We may be seeing a similar thing now with the obesity virus,’ suggests Dr John Foreyt from Baylor College, Texas.

‘We really don’t know why people get fat or why people are skinny. There’s so much that is unknown and that’s why we need new theories and people looking at why our bodies are the way they are,’ he says.

One possible hypothesis is that, in the late ’70s, someone working on a chicken farm in India had the Ad-36 virus and came in contact with birds with SMAM-1. The two viruses got together, exchanged genetic material, and turned into a hybrid virus capable of infecting humans and making them fat. There is nothing, of course, to confirm this series of events, but Dr Dhurandhar now has research grants to help him develop his theories. He has his sights set on a vaccine against the fat virus, but accepts that could be some way off:

‘It would be absolutely fascinating to have a vaccine to prevent at least some types of obesity virus – that’s my dream,’ he says.

I’m probably the only person in America who didn’t watch the inauguration.  I guess it’s because I’ve seen his face on magazine covers, newspapers and TV for the past two years, and right now it’s Obama overload for me.  I didn’t even watch the news for two days after the inauguration.  I was getting sick to seeing the media salivate and pee their pants over the overated Obama.  Maybe I needed a mini vacation from Obamanation.  I did hear an earful from friends who told me some of the goings on during the festivities.  Tom Brokaw was quoted as saying that "Obama will be among the top 10 presidents of all time."  Really?  He hasn’t done anything yet, and they want to put him on that pedestal again.  That’s just like giving someone a gold medal before they have had a chance to compete and prove himself/herself.  Since when do we congratulate someone for something they haven’t yet accomplished?  Some people are insane.  I did watch a little of the news today and what did I see?  Some journalist asking a black woman how she feels about Obama being our president.  She actually said (really dramatizing it), "I’m so happy!  Now I can put gas in my car and my mortgage will be paid."  What???  I think that some people have this weird notion that now that Obama is on the scene, we’re all going to magically get all our bills paid.  It’s insane!  I’ve never seen anything like it!  If you have read my past blogs about Obama, you can see why I’m not buying what he’s been selling.
It just infuriates me that here is a guy who has zero experience, a past checkered with bad associations, no legal birth certificate stating he was born in the USA, and he’s now our 44th president.  Obama says he wants to "return to open and transparent government".  He promised to run the most transparent White House in history—disclosing donations, shunning lobbyists, and broadcasting important meetings on C-SPAN.  Oh, really?  I’m still waiting for him to fork over his original birth certificate…the one with the seal affixed to it, not the shoddy counterfeit one he tried to pass on to us as legitimate.  He’s now hiring lobbyists and waiving his own rules.  What a guy!  Try and go against him and you’ll be labeled the "R" word.

Another thing…there’s his lack of willingness to discuss at length, and have records released of, activities he was involved in during the time he served as a State Senator in Illinois.  Jim Geraghty writes:

"Just to review, the public cannot get access to paperwork related grants distributed by then-state-legislator Obama (records from 1997 to 2000 aren’t available); his state legislative office records (which he says ‘may have been thrown out’); he refuses to release a specific list of law clients, instead giving a list of all of his firm’s clients, numbering several hundred each year; he won’t release his application to the state bar (where critics wonder if he lied in responding to questions about parking tickets and past drug use); he’s never released any legal or billing records to verify that he only did a few hours of work for a nonprofit tied to convicted donor Rezko; and he’s never released any medical records, just a one-page letter from his doctor."

Now the University of Illinois at Chicago is denying Stanley Kurtz access to documents relating to the Chicago Annenberg Challenge, a small foundation, founded and inspired by Bill Ayers, for which Obama served as board chairman.
From what I see, it’s been nothing but a media frenzy on who can kiss Obama’s butt the best.  He hasn’t accomplished a thing, and yet he has captivated an entire country (well, almost).  People ask me how I feel about him, and if you know me, you know I tell them the truth.  When I ask them what has he accomplished, I hear the same thing over and over again…"he brought us all together and he’s promoting change".  Really?  There is still hatred, murder, suicide, war, poverty and a downward spiraling economy in this country.  It didn’t magically disappear after he took office.  Granted, there is a lot of love in this country as well, but he had nothing to do with that.  We have done that on our own.  If you ask me, his presidency is bringing more racism than I have ever seen in my life.  If you stop and think about it, Hitler had millions of followers, too.  He talked a good game, and look at the kind of guy he turned out to be.  Now, I’m not calling Obama, Hitler.  All I’m saying is there are some similarities here, which I pointed out in a previous blog.  The power that Hitler received from his followers embedded something sinister inside of him.  It happens to a lot of men who receive a lot of power.  I’ve seen it, not to that magnitude, but when some men gain power, they change—their testosterone level goes into the stratosphere.  Just look at what corporate greed does to CEOs.  Hmmm…there’s that word again…change.  Obama will change, too.  You mark my words.  All this media hype and the adoring fan club that surrounds him will change him.  Look at what happens to celebrities once they reach stardom.  They go from a humble person to a greedy monster.  It happens all the time.  Obama has a lot of gall to compare himself to Abraham Lincoln, one of the most accomplished presidents of all time.  President Lincoln was the epitome of humility and quiet strength.  Obama is the exact opposite, and couldn’t even hold a candle to President Lincoln.
One thing you have to say about Bush, he was a humble guy who brought dignity back into the White House, and his wife, Laura, brought grace into it.  Say what you want about Bush, you can’t deny that he kept us safe for the 7 years after September 11th.  Obama, on the other hand, even needed help reciting his oath how the heck is he going to run this country?  When he couldn’t remember all the words that were put in front of him by Chief Justice Roberts, he was given a free pass by the media and his obamabots who blamed the Chief Justice for misplacing the word "faithfully".  If you watch the first video, you can clearly see that Obama had too many words in front of him to remember and that’s what made him stop short, it wasn’t the word "faithfully".  Obama’s "pregnant pause" is what caused the Chief Justice to screw up, not the other way around.  I did notice that Michelle purses her lips when he screws up.  Some Obamabots actually think that Obama stopped reciting his oath because the Justice didn’t use the word "faithfully" in the proper place.  Please!  Can someone please knock some sense into these freakazoids?
In the second video, there was just audio which tells me that this time around, he was probably put in front of his best friend, the teleprompter [where he does best] to recite his oath.  Why wasn’t a bible used for the repeat performance?  Couldn’t he have sent one of his Obamabots to go "fetch" one from the library which was probably just a stone’s throw away from where he was standing?  It’s just sickening how people fall all over him and cover up for him when he screws up.  I thought the way people fall all over celebrities was bad—this is 100 times worse!  Time for the Obamedia to do their jobs and reveal the real Obama, not the airbrushed version they want us to see.  Airbrushing may work for celebrity pictures, but in the real world, the president should be out, front and center.  Journalism has really tanked with this administration, and journalistic integrity is now just a fond memory.  Professional integrity used to be the cornerstone of a journalist’s credibility, so what happened?
Despite the admiration and positive press he gets from the Obamedia, the euphoria is beginning to wane in less than a week in office.  His approval ratings have fallen from a stratospheric 83% to a more modest 68%.  Hmmm…
One news story that shocked me was the story about a middle school in Billerica.  Apparently, the class was watching the inauguration on TV and some kids booed when Obama stepped up to the podium.  Those same kids received detention, and all they were booing was the TV.  Kids who don’t know any better get detention, yet the adults who do know better and who booed when Bush was introduced at the inauguration, gets a free pass from the press and Obama.  Welcome to Obamanation…Land of the subjugated, Home of the corrupt.

The reason these corporate airheads are drowning in debt is because they got a taste of the good life, and they just can’t let go of it, even though their companies are sinking faster than the Titanic did.  This is utterly dispicable, and it’s our fault because we let it continue to happen.  Where is the public’s outrage?
OK, for argument’s sake, let’s say they do need a corporate jet.  Did they have to purchase one from France?  Did it have to have all the bells and whistles?  Hey, I’d love a new car with a navigation system, leather seats, etc., but I have an older car with very little perks because THAT’S WHAT I CAN AFFORD!!!  Time for these corporate pigs to tighten their overinflated belts like the rest of us have to do.
Why do you think the corrupt auto CEOs were willing to take a $1 salary this year?  Because they know they are grossly overrated, overpaid corporate pigs, and this shows how enormous their appetites and egos are…

STILL ‘HIGH’ ON THE HOG: Citigroup, fresh off its $45 billion rescue, is going ahead with the purchase of a Dassault Falcon 7X.

Beleaguered Citigroup is upgrading its mile-high club with a brand-new $50 million corporate jet – only this time, it’s the taxpayers who are getting screwed.

Even though the bank’s stock is as cheap as a gallon of gas and it’s burning through a $45 billion taxpayer-funded rescue, the airhead execs pushed through the purchase of a new Dassault Falcon 7X, according to a source familiar with the deal.

The French-made luxury jet seats up to 12 in a plush interior with leather seats, sofas and a customizable entertainment center, according to Dassault’s sales literature. It can cruise 5,950 miles before refueling and has a top speed of 559 mph.

There are just nine of these top-of-the-line models in the United States, with Dassault’s European factory churning out three to four 7Xs a month.

Citigroup decided to get its new wings two years ago, when the financial-services giant was flush with cash, but it still intends to take possession of the jet this year despite its current woes, the source said.

"Why should I help you when what you write will be used to the detriment of our company?" replied Bill McNamee, head of CitiFlight Inc., the subsidiary that manages Citigroup’s corporate fleet, when asked to comment about the new 7X.

"What relevance does it have but to hurt my company?"

It’s not uncommon for large companies to pay a deposit on a new plane then cancel the order before delivery, according to a source in the corporate aviation business.

Citigroup execs are also quietly trying to unload two of their older Dassault 900EXs.

Those jets, nearly 10 years old, are worth an estimated $27 million each. They were still listed for sale yesterday on the Web site of Citigroup’s aviation broker, Aviation Professionals.

A company representative said she would not comment on "brokering both sides of the deal" when asked about the incoming Falcon 7X.

The Dassaults are part of CitiFlight’s Gulf Sierra fleet, which includes the two Falcon 900EXs, tail numbers N399GS and N588GS, currently for sale. FAA records show Citigroup reserved a new tail number, N488GS, possibly for the incoming 7X on Nov. 10 last year.

A woman answering the phone at CitiFlight’s private hangar in White Plains said she was "not authorized to release information" about the new jet.

Dassault’s US sales office declined to comment.

Citigroup spokesman Stephen Cohen declined to comment.

Interesting…I wonder who will fill this seat, if at all…
The Vacant Seat Number 666 in the European Parliament

By admin | January 26, 2009

This seat still remains unfilled. Who is it being saved for???

Report on the opening of the Fifth Elected Parliament of Europe in Strasbourg and its occupancy of the new Parliament Buildings.
Ian R.K: Paisley, M.P., M.E.P.

The recently elected Fifth Parliament of Europe met on Tuesday, 20th July, 1999, in its new glass building which cost the taxpayers of Europe an as yet uncalculated sum of billions of Pounds. The first meeting, due to begin at 10.00 a.m., did not start until 10.30 because the amplification system, which cost millions of Pounds, was defective. No doubt more defects in this Crystal Palace will be manifested in the days to come.

Incidentally, the Members of the European Parliament had no say whatsoever in where the building was to be located, what its design was to be, what amount of money was to be spent on it, or how it was to be furnished. The French Government forced it both upon Members of Parliament and upon the Governments of European Union countries, Germany and the United Kingdom being made to foot the exorbitant bill. These two countries are Europe’s pay slaves.

The prophetic significance of the European Union has been revealed as the saga unfolds. [See our two articles on "The Conspiracy behind the European Union".] First, the sign which it chose as its symbol was the Woman riding the Beast. This comes from a prophecy in Revelation 17. The depiction of the harlot woman was reproduced on the centenary stamp of the European Union, in a huge painting in the Parliament’s new building in Brussels, and by a huge sculpture outside the new E.U. Council of Ministers Office in Brussels. The new European coinage, the Euro, bears the same insignia. The Tower of Babel has been used on the posters emanating from Europe – a truly suggestive prophetic sign.

Now, a massive Crystal Palace tower (officially called the Tower Building) houses the Fifth Parliament of Europe.

It is certainly a building of the Space Age. The seats of its massive hemicycle are designed like the crew seats in the Star Trek space machines. There are 679 of them – but wait for it! While these seats are allocated to Members, one seat remains unallocated and unoccupied. The number of that seat is 666. The relevant section of the seating-plan provided to each Member reads as follows:

  • 655 Couteaux
  • 656 Fitzsimons
  • 657 Hyland
  • 658 Kuntz
  • 659 De La Perrière
  • 660 Marchiani
  • 661 Montfort
  • 662 Quiero
  • 663 Souchet
  • 664 Thomas-Mauro
  • 665 Zissener
  • 666 ——-
  • 667 Cappato
  • 668 Turco
  • 669 Bonino
  • 670 Pannella
  • 671 Dupuis
  • 672 Della Vedova
  • 673 Dell’Alba
  • 674 Gorostiaga Atxalandabaso
  • 675 Gobbo
  • 676 Speroni
  • 677 Bossi
  • 678 Formentini
  • 679 Crowley

Revelation 13:18: “Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.” That is 666.

Today this scripture is being fulfilled before our very eyes.

The Antichrist’s seat will be occupied. The world awaits his full and final development. The Lord will destroy him by the spirit of His mouth (the Word of God) and by the brightness of His coming (2 Thes. 2:8). The coming of the Lord draweth nigh.

Wow!  Talk about life imitating art…

Husband’s kiss woke ‘sleeping beauty wife’ in coma after heart attack

After two weeks sitting by his wife’s bedside hoping she would wake from a coma, Andrew Ray was at his wits’ end.

Doctors had told him Emma could become a real-life sleeping beauty when she failed to regain consciousness after a heart attack.

The distraught father of two played her tapes of their baby son crying and their daughter shouting ‘wake up Mummy!’.

Finally, in desperation, he leant over her hospital bed and pleaded: ‘Emma, if you can hear me, please just give me a kiss.’

Kiss of life: Andrew woke his ‘sleeping beauty’ wife Emma from her coma with a kiss.

‘What happened next was beyond my wildest dreams,’ he said. ‘She turned her head towards mine, puckered up her lips and gave me a little kiss. ‘I couldn’t believe it. My heart felt like it was going to leap from my chest  –  it suddenly felt like a huge weight had been lifted.’ The kiss was witnessed by doctors who were astonished by the 34-year-old’s sudden response.

Mrs. Ray had suffered the heart attack just ten days after giving birth to her son. Her horrified husband had to give her mouth-to-mouth after she collapsed while they were out shopping. She was taken to the hospital where doctors were able to restart her heart, but warned she could remain in a coma indefinitely.

Mr. Ray said a doctor told him: ‘She could wake up the following day, she could wake up in a month, or you may be left with a sleeping beauty.’

The IT consultant from Telford, Shropshire, tried to rouse his wife by playing recordings of their baby son Alexander and toddler Ella. He said: ‘I would play Emma the sounds of Alexander crying and gurgling, Ella singing and shouting "Wake up Mummy!". ‘I even played her recordings of the songs we had danced to during our wedding. ‘I would speak softly to her, clasp her hand, pinch her fingers, all the time telling her I loved her or begging her to wake up. By the time I asked her to kiss me, I was approaching my wits’ end.’

The happy couple embrace on their wedding day in 2000.

However, the kiss was just the start of an agonizing battle for Mrs. Ray, who continued to drift in and out of consciousness. Her brain had been starved of oxygen when her heart stopped beating, and the resulting injury left her with short-term memory loss. Mrs. Ray was transferred from the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital to a specialist brain injury rehabilitation unit at the Hayward Hospital in Stoke-on-Trent. She was eventually allowed home, but now almost two years later, the former IT consultant still needs ongoing rehabilitation for the brain damage she suffered.

Doctors believe her heart attack may have been caused by a blood clot after her son Alexander, now two, was delivered by Caesarean section. She had been to see a GP the night before her cardiac arrest, complaining of palpitations, but was told it was probably down to a minor infection.

Mrs. Ray said: ‘The recovery is awful because I have so little memory. ‘I would wish above all else to be well, to walk unaided and to have my memory back. ‘I would love to remember what I’ve done each day. Andrew helps me to do everything. Without him, I don’t know how I’d cope.’

Mr. Ray said he was just grateful his wife had survived. He said: ‘She can walk quite well holding hands now, and at least our kids still have a mother and I still have a wife.’

Is there no end to greed?  It seems like Fraudie Mac is back for another handout (with Fraudie Mae close behind)…

Freddie Seeks Up to $35 Billion From U.S.; Fannie May Follow

By Dawn Kopecki and Jody Shenn

Jan. 24 (Bloomberg) — Freddie Mac, the mortgage-finance company under federal control, needs as much as $35 billion more in federal aid, and Fannie Mae may soon ask the U.S. Treasury Department for rescue funds as well.

Freddie, which took $13.8 billion from Treasury in November, said in a securities filing yesterday that its fourth- quarter operating losses will again drive its net worth below zero. The McLean, Virginia-based company also said it settled a dispute over Washington Mutual loans with JPMorgan Chase & Company.

The request for funds comes as the Treasury faces increasing demands from U.S. financial companies, including Bank of America and Citigroup, Inc., that are coping with the fallout from a slumping housing market and a deep recession that’s driving foreclosures to record levels. Treasury officials pledged in September as much as $100 billion to Fannie and Freddie each to ensure their solvency.

“Their losses are going to be much higher than anyone anticipated,” said Paul Miller, an analyst with FBR Capital Markets in Arlington, Virginia. “The more and more that people are digging into these portfolios, they’re finding out the more and more these guys were doing sub-prime and Alt-A loans and classifying them as prime.” Alt-A loans were made to borrowers with little or no income verification or to those with credit scores slightly above sub-prime.

Freddie and Washington-based Fannie are the largest sources of mortgage money in the U.S., owning or guaranteeing a combined $5.2 trillion of the $12 trillion home-loan market.

The companies have posted five consecutive quarters of losses totaling $68.4 billion combined. The Federal Housing Finance Administration seized their operations in September amid concern from regulators that the government-sponsored enterprises may fail in the worst housing slump since the Great Depression.

Fannie’s Plans

Fannie, which hasn’t yet drawn on the Treasury backup funds, said in November that it may do so after it reports fourth-quarter results next month. Fannie also said at that time that $100 billion may not be enough to keep it afloat. Treasury agreed to pump money into the companies if the value of their assets drops below what they owe on their obligations.

“Given that they have $4.5 trillion of risk out there, $100 billion is a drop in the bucket,” Miller said. “Given the fact that their risk profile on these loans is greater than they led everyone to believe, greater than $100 billion in losses on each institution would not surprise me.”

Stefanie Mullin, a Federal Housing Finance Agency spokeswoman, declined to comment.

FHFA Director, James Lockhart, who regulates the companies, said in an interview this week that one or both companies may request federal aid after they report fourth-quarter earnings next month.

Reporting in February

“They will be reporting numbers in mid-to-late February and, yes, I think everybody would expect that there would be a draw on Treasury,” Lockhart said.

Spokesman, Brian Faith at Fannie, Sharon McHale at Freddie and Thomas Kelly at JPMorgan declined to comment.

Freddie’s settlement with JPMorgan, which took over WaMu’s assets after the thrift collapsed in September, will allow the New York-based bank to retain WaMu’s mortgage-servicing contracts, according to the filing.

‘One-Time’ Payment

In exchange, JPMorgan will assume WaMu’s obligations to repurchase any bad home loans that the thrift sold to Freddie with “recourse.” JPMorgan will make a “one-time” payment to cover other loans that WaMu would have been required to buy back because the mortgages failed to meet promises made to Freddie about their quality, according to the filing.

The filing didn’t specify how much JPMorgan is paying Freddie.
