“We’re at the crossroads. Down one road is a European centralized bureaucratic socialist welfare system in which politicians and bureaucrats define the future. Down the other road is a proud, solid, reaffirmation of American exceptionalism.”

Church offers to pay more to avoid $666 bill

The number 666 is ironic enough, but the name of the church, “Crossroads” is a little over the top, and very prophetic.  Church staffers checked the amount 3 times—another prophetic number…Jesus Christ was denied by Peter 3 times; on the 3rd day, Christ rose from the dead; and let’s not forget the fact that the Democrats denied God Himself 3 times during the Democratic Convention.

We certainly are at a crossroads in this world.  If it were me, instead of adding $1 to the amount owed, I would have added another Cross—for protection…

Kearney church fee changed to avoid foreboding 666 number

Though not usually a superstitious organization, one Kearney church asked to be charged more — for a fee it didn’t have to pay — when the figure came to $666.

The Kearney Board of Aldermen approved a fee waiver of $667 for the building permit for Crossroads Community Church’s expansion.

During the Feb. 19 meeting, Mayor Bill Dane pointed out the fee was originally $666, but the Rev. Brett Toole, pastor of the church, asked to add $1 to the fee to avoid the number associated with the mark of the beast — the Antichrist — in Christian numerology.

The city, upon request, typically waives such fees for churches and nonprofit organizations. And despite not having to pay the fee, Toole didn’t like its implication. When the city emailed to inform him the total for the building permit fee would be $666, he asked if it could charge $1 more.

“It was all in fun,” Toole said.

The aldermen approved the fee waiver, with the added dollar, unanimously.

David Pavlich, community development director, said he and staff ran the figures three times to ensure $666 was accurate before sending the bill to the church. Building fees for expansion are 40 cents per square foot, plus fees for things like electrical and plumbing hookup, according to Pavlich.

Church members recently had a groundbreaking ceremony.

The church is building an approximately 1,200-square-foot addition behind its foyer for at least four new classrooms at its building on Petty Road on the south side town. Depending on weather, the addition will be complete in two to four months.

Just like with the original church building, a contractor will provide the outer shell of the structure, but volunteer labor within the church will complete most of the interior.
